New Year’s Eve Dangers – How to stay safe

The end of the year is upon us. It is a time of reflection and making memories with loved ones. However, in the height of the celebrations, dangers are prevalent. The mixing of celebrations and alcohol alone can make for a disastrous turnout.

According to the National Safety Council (NSC), approximately one out of ten accidents in December are over the New Year’s celebration. The most common types of NYE accidents include, but are not limited to:

  • drunk driving car accidents
  • fires
  • slip and falls
  • gun accidents
  • pedestrian accidents

Here’s some tips to enjoy your New Year’s Eve safely:

Don’t Drink and Drive

You’ve heard it a thousand times before. And the old age adage still stands true: DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE! Enjoying a beverage or two is a fun way to celebrate an incoming new year; however, can land you behind bars or cause irreversible damage to you or someone else’s life.

If you plan to consume alcohol, plan a safe way home. There are many ride sharing apps available, friends, family and neighbors that can be the designated driver.

Watch Where You Step

Many people opt to walk home after their NYE celebrations. This can also be incredibly hazardous this time of year. If you choose to walk home instead of drive, pay attention! Look both ways before crossing the street, avoid drinking too much and wear brightly-colored clothing.

Slip and falls are also prominent this time of year. Snow and ice on the ground can make for a slippery and potentially deadly situation. Keep your eyes focused on where you step and ensure there is proper lighting.

Fireworks Safety

NYE is the time of fireworks, bonfires and fun. Don’t become another statistic by being careless. If you are lighting fireworks, maintain a safe distance after you light the fuse. Place the firework in a safe location away from anything flammable.

If you are enjoying a bonfire, ensure it is lit away from your home or any excess kindling lying around. Keep children away from any source of fire by keeping them at a safe distance.

Firearm Safety

It is tradition for many to shoot off a firearm at the stroke of midnight. This can pose a serious and deadly threat to any passersby. If someone chooses to engage in firing a weapon, make sure they are properly trained and licensed to do so. Also, stand far away and out of range of the firearm; do not stand directly underneath nor fire straight up into the air.
